Frequently asked questions.
What is BJJ?
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, or BJJ, is a martial art based on grappling and ground fighting, focusing on the skill of controlling one’s opponent through techniques that force him or her to submit. BJJ prides itself on being known as “the gentle art”, allowing a smaller, weaker person using leverage and submissions to defend himself against a bigger opponent. Whether it is for recreation, competition, fitness or for self defence we will help you reach your goals! Since the early days of the sport, it has grown immensely and is practised around the world today.
What should I bring to my first class?
We’ll provide you nearly everything you need to take your first class. You should wear comfortable clothing you can move freely in. No zips or buttons. Please remove jewellery and watches prior to getting on the mats. You should also bring a water bottle.
Why do you offer a FREE weeks trial?
We’re confident in the quality of our instruction and in the quality of our instructors. We want potential students to see the quality that we have to offer as well, which is why we offer a week-long free trial for anyone interested. We want you to have a test run of this sport to make sure its something that you or your child is interested in.
What should I expect in my first class?
When you come in, you’ll already be registered in our membership portal. Please feel free to place your belongings in the storage squares near the mats. Please take your shoes off ( shoes are NEVER worn on the mats.) Your coach will greet you and introduce themselves as soon as they have a moment. Feel free to jump on and start some stretching. In the class, you’ll start with a short warm-up, followed by some technique. At the end of the class, you’ll do some live training; the instructor will walk you through the details of sparring, tapping, and so on.
Do you offer once-a-week training packages?
We take the progression of our students very seriously, and our academy is very near capacity: as such, we don’t offer once-a-week training packages. It’s almost impossible to become better while training once a week as well. We suggest that everyone (kids and adults) train twice a week at the beginning and, if need be, increase the volume of training from there.
I have a question - who can I talk too?
Elishia is your point of contact for anything and everything you need. She can be contacted directly on 0466 208 077, or via the messages options on our socials. We are extremely responsive to enquiries - she will get back to you stat.
How old should my child be to join classes?
Every child is different. However, we believe that 4 years is a perfect age to start a martial art such as BJJ. Our Mighty Minis Kids programs cater for 4-8 year olds, and focus on making self-defence and physical education fun. We use conditioning and skill-oriented games to engage and challenge kids. We also offer Juniors & Seniors class twice a week which is designed for 8-10 & 11-16 year olds to develop their motor skills and a love for physical activity. Here at The Jiu-Jitsu Hub, our curriculums are second to none, specially designed for each age group.
When does my child “age out” of classes?
Put Simply - they don’t. We are one of the few academies that offer children exclusive classes up until age 16. We don’t put children in our adults classes. Our curriculum nurtures children in age specific groups, throughout their childhood. Once they are of age and size at 17 years, they are then progressed straight into our adults classes. Your child could essentially train from age 4 - 40 years old here!
What is No Gi Training?
A style of Jiu-Jitsu where gripping of material is not permitted, and techniques are altered appropriately. A realistic transition to self-defence in the street as well as training for a rapidly growing sport.
No Gi is a far better style if you want to develop a strong grappling offense. It teaches you how to mix BJJ with wrestling techniques to put strong pressure on your opponents. You wll spend a lot of time learning how to use balance, hand positioning, and body mechanics.
No Gi action is much faster and the rolling sessions are often exhausting. This will certainly improve your cardio and endurance after just a few months of training. Over time, your reactions will also become much faster since you don’t have much time to think during the rolls.
Do I need experience?
Not at all. If you have already trained in a different martial art that’s great but you don’t need any previous martial arts experience. Regardless of whether you’re just starting out on your BJJ journey, or an old timer, you will always be welcome. We have an incredibly welcoming atmosphere here - and our team is always ready to lend a hand.
Do I need to be fit to start training BJJ?
You don’t need to be fit or ‘in shape’ to start training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. In fact, BJJ is an excellent full-body workout and a great way to improve your health and fitness. At The Jiu-Jitsu Hub everybody is welcome regardless of their level of fitness, age, ability, or experience. We focus on technique, and this is something absolutely anyone can do.
Where do I buy a Uniform or Gi?
We stock & sell our own Academy branded Gi’s and gear in our merchandise store.
Please note, our preference is that our members use club Gi’s. If competing for the academy, students are required to wear a Club branded Gi or Rashie ONLY.
When should I (or my child) start competing?
Competing is great for everyone, and everyone should do it as much as possible. We can recommend good competitions for beginners— but there are competitions available for children as young as 3, and divisions based on age and ability for older students as well. We expect 6 months of training before our students are ready to compete. Competing is highly recommended at our academy— just get in there and do it!
